BOXING

AMATEUR TOURNAMENT AT NEW PLYMOUTH. Great interest is being evinced in the tournament to be held by the New Plymouth Amateur Boxing Association in the Drill Hall on Wednesday evening, 3!iih iiist. The programme which has been arranged should provide really good eler.n sport. The most prominent feature of the tournament will be a contest for the heavy-weight championship of the province. Entries for this will close at 8 p.m. on Friday next. The entrants at present are: J. Luke-Morris (heavyweight champion of Manawatu and mid-dle-weight champion of Wellington), and Hawkins, of New Plymouth. Even if no other entries are received, these two boxers should provide a splendid contest. Both men are training hard and are certain to be in first-class condition.

Another event on the programme that should provide a fine exposition of boxing will be a special match between two light-weights: N. Bond, of Wanganui, and A. C. Maxwell, of New Plymouth. There will also be a special match between two middle-weights, J. Power (Okato) and S. Lovegrove (New Plymouth). The remainder of the programme will consist of novice competitions, in two classes, viz.: (1) lOst and under; and (2) over lOst. Entries for these will close at 8 p.m. on Friday next. All entries for these competitions must be accompanied by attested declarations that the entrants are amateurs who have never before won any competition or match. The entrance fees have been fixed at 2s Cd, of which the whole will be 'returned to competitors who are members of the Association, and Is Gd to nonmembers.

Tlie attention of competitors is directed to the rule concerning costumes, which must consist of knickerbockers and jerseys. The complete costume must be of dark coloured material. Boots or shoes must not have spikes.
