Count Tolstoi declines to receive his relations, fearing they will shake his resolution to spend his remaining days in isolation. Crowds of peasants surround the little railway station, praying for his recovery. THE COUNT'S CONDITION IMPROVES Received 20, 5.5 p.m. Astapowo, November 19. Count Tolstoi succeeded in swallowing a few spoonfuls of gruel. His catarrh is gradually disappearing. He is conscious, but sleepy, and very weak. Artificial respiration is being applied. IN GLORIOUS ISOLATION. Received 21, 1.2 a.m. St. Petersburg, November 20. After Count Tolstoi's second cardiac attack yesterday morphia was injected. The Countess was admitted to his bedside this morning, but her husband did not recognise her. A later message states that the first attack lasted for twenty minutes. Then he became conscious, and in the evening he slept. He had a second seizure in the early morning, then again slept, and did not regain consciousness. He died at six in the morning.
