THE GOVERNOR'S SPEECH. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sidney, November 10. The Governor officially opened Parliament. His s-'peceh was very short —a resume of Mr. MeGowen's pre-sessionai speech. THE INDEPENDENTS' LEANING. Sydney, November 10. The eight Independent members of the Assembly have decided to support the Government as long as its proposals arc in the interests of the whole community. FORMS DISPENSED WITH. REFORMS PROMISED. Received 16, 8.20 p.m. Sydney, November 16. Mr. Cann, the new 'Speaker, dispensed with the Speaker's official robes, and a. number of other small innovations in regard to formalities marked the commencement of the Labor rule. The Governor's Speech promised a brief session, and referred to the continuance of prosperous seasons and the buoyancy of the revenue. The finances would be arranged to meet the serious diminution of revenue from the Commonwealth, which the State would shortly have to face. In future accounts would be prepared, showing receipts and expenditure in public business undertakings, and the sale of public assets, separate from the ordinary accounts and general Governmental services.
LAND POLICY CRITICISED. Received 16, 12.55 a.m. Sydney, November 16. The Council adopted the Address-in-Reply. In the Assembly an amendment was moved regretting that the conduct oi the Government in connection with the administration of public lands, in refusing the' people the right to acquire in future the freehold of such lands for settlement purposes, is inimical to the best interests of the State. After some warm discussion the House adjourned till to-morrow.
