BIG FIRE AT ADELAIDE. Received 16, 9.20 p.m. Adelaide, November 16. The most disastrous city fire for years practically destroyed Gender's Buildings, a large four-storey block,covering 100 (?) square feet and embracing 13 business places and offices, the largest being Whillas and Ormiston, printers; Solomon and Company, furniture importers; and the Adelaide Clothing Company. There is no estimate of the damage. Insurances total £22,480, distributed amongst various companies. THE COAL LUMPERS' STRIKE. Sydney, November 16. Employers seem ignorant of the real reason of the coal lumpers' strike. Several conferences were held recently, and it was verbally decided to pay Is 9d for work between f> p.m. and fi "a.m. This constitutes an increase of l'/ a d an hour. The agreement was to be signed to-uay. The lumpers were unaware of this, and it is supposed their action was due to a desire to give a strong hint that the negotiations were too protracted. The Union officials profess surprise at the action, stating that the strike was organised outside the Union. Normal conditions are expected to-day. weeks ago. THE WHARF LUMPERS' STRIKE. Received 17, 12.55 a.m. . Sydney, November 16. The coal lumpers are holding a mass meeting to discuss the agreement wiieh is reported to have been made between the Lumpers' Union and ttie employers, conceding Is !M an hour overtime pay.
