CANADIAN MAIL SERVICE
A DISPUTE ABOUT ROUTES. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 10. 12.35 a.m. ' Melbourne, November 15. The Federal Cabinet lengthily considered the Canadian Postmaster-General's request for concurrence with the acceptance of the Union Company's tender for the Vancouver mail service from August 1 next. The route provided for the omission of Brisbane and the inclusion of Auckland as a port of call, with Sydney as the terminal port. Cabinet decided not to. agree to this route, and a cable to that effect was sent to the Canadian Government. Further negotiations may follow, as the tender provided four alternative routes, but the Commonwealth is not prepared to substitute Auckland for Brisbane. The Canadian Government may possibly accept the tender without the Commonwealth's concurrence, though this is not considered likely. It is understood that the New Zealand Government will be prepared to contribute £25,000 towards the cost. If Canada should join with New Zealand in arranging a new service, the Federal Government will have to determine whether it will subsidise a new steamship company to provide a direct service between Australia and Canada.
