SEA CAPTAINS PAY
CLAIMS FOR AN INCREASE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 15, 12.15 a.m. Sydney, November 14. In connection with the Merchant Service Guild's claims, the secretary of the Guild stated that since giving evidence the late chief officer of the steamer Time had had his rating reduced, and had lost his ship. The President of the Arbitration Court said he could not take evidence of the matter. The secretary of the Steamship Owners' Association declared they were willing that evidence should be taken. They had a thorough explanation of the case. He also said the Association was in favor of increments to masters, but not to officers, because they had not the same responsibility as masters. The chief officer of the steamer Georgic, giving evidence as to the in the cost of living in Australia and England, said that as a general thing a pound would go as far in England as thirty shillings in Australia. For a suit of underclothing costing nine shillings in England one would probably pay sixteen shillings in New Zealand.
