WITHIN A FEW FEET OF SHORE.

Stanley, a single man, aged 3a| years, employed as an A.B. on tbj| steamer Kotare, was drowned at 6 p.n|| yesterday at Waikawa, as the vessel wq|| leaving for Dunedin. It was necessary|| when swinging the vessel round, to throw! out a small' anchor to keep her bowl off the bank. Stanley went about 5m yards from the steamer in a boat bjl himself, and threw the anchor out, but! it did not clear the boat properly. Mj endeavoring to clear it, he fell over-| board. He immediately got hold of th»| boat, but it. turned upside down. He goti on top of it, and would have been re,B*| cued had lie remained there, but Mi struck out for the ship. He had gone butl a little distance when he called outJ and sank, apparently being unable tq| swim. He was drowned in eight feet oljj water, and had he struck out for thai shore instead of the ship, he would prOwi bably have been safe. Efforts to recover! the body were unsuccessful up to thai time the Kotare left. The deecased lived! at the Bluff when off the vessel. Si
