HORRIBLE WHARF ACCIDENT
KILLED BY A CAPSTAN.
By Telegraph.— Press Association. , ) Wellington, Last Night. ,: |i A horrible accident happened at thej Glasgow wharf at 4.20 p.m. yesterday,!; whereby John Patrick Baillie, aged 6(J| years, was killed instantly. Baillie wa* a permanent employee of the New Zea-? land Shipping Company, and was engagij ed in loading cargo for the steamer Rua-< hine. He was working at the ropes of U capstan controlled by hydraulic power,? He became entangled in the ropes, and,? the machinery being set in motion, th*; unfortunate man was violently whirled round the capstan for several minute*] until the pressure could be turned off; 1 His left leg was completely torn frpnij I the groin, his left arm torn from th« shoulder, the left foot crushed, the bacK of the head bruised, and the body gen! erally terribly mangled. An inquest was held this afternoon, and a verdict of ac-j cidental death was returned. The de 4 ceased leaves a widow and a grown-uw family of four. • r ,"
