PETROLEUM AS RAILWAY FUEL. A SUCCESSFUL TRIAL. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A trial was made to-day on the Hutt railway of Taranaki petroleum as fuei for locomotives. A tank engine, fitted with an atomiser for spraying the crude oil into the firebox, successfully took a heavy freight train to Upper Hutt and then returned light to town. The experiment seems to have worked satisfactorily, though the necessary data to determine how much oil fuel costs in comparison with coal, how much it cosU to handle oil, and what effect it will have on the firebox and fittings, will noli be worked out by the authorities for some time.
The Standard Oil Company's bore on Carrington road is down 3050 feet, reports the head driller, Mr. B. O'Dowda, who is hopeful of it turning out the best yet put down in Taranaki. Ai 3030 feet the bore passed through a gas and oil seam. Below that was a seam of sandstone, and now the drilling is in a nice blue clay. All the obstacles which for so long interfered with drilling have been overcome, and satisfactory progress is now being made.
