STRATFORD DAY BY DAY
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night,
Rifleman E. Brocklebank secured a "leg-in" for Mr. C. Jackson's trophy yesterday, when there was a good muster of members of the Stratford Rifle Club on the singe. A yaung man named L. J. Pepperill was committed for trial at the S.M. Court this morning on the charge of carnally knowing a girl under the age of sixteen. A teacher at a local Sunday School got rather a surprise last Sunday. One of the small boys attending the class had on the previous Sunday been given a card to learn. This contained the word "superfluity," rather a big mouthful for the youngster. However, he was not disheartened, and during the week learnt the word. But, unfortunately, it was one thing to say it over and over at home, and another thing to pronounce it before a class. So when Sunday came, and he was called upon to recite his card, the youngster got stage-fright and, reaching the fatal word, he hesitated. He could not recall how it should be pronounced, but at last, remembering it was something to do with "fluid,'' made a desperate shot, and astonished the teacher by coming out with "Jeys' Fluid." It was a 'good attempt. The Hine charges still continue to be of interest to residents of this district, and the public are now asking, "Who sent the telegram?" I hear that the lambing season has not been up to expectations in this district. With fine weather the back country roads are improving, and settlers are able to get in and out without having to wade through the mud morasses which in winter time are designated roads.
