STRATFORD DAY BY DAY
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. The monthly wool and hides sales were lield on Tuesday. High prices, in view of the state of the Lo;idon market at present, were realised for all lines. The rain which fell yesterday and today was welcomed by the fanners. The annual inspection by the inspectors of the local school will be held on Thursday and Friday. The Druids Lodge are holding a fancyI dress ball to-night. The daisy—tlie small flower beloved by Burns—has not as a rule been regarded as a nuisance. To children it has been a source of delight and "daisy chains" have whiled away the hours for many a, toddler. Farmers, however, are beginning to notice that the daisy is spreading through the district and yearly increasing. Some farmers are taking steps which they hope will prove successful in checking the spread. From all accounts the grass throughout the district has not come on during the past three weeks as fast as was anticipated. • The warm spell following preceding rainy weeks baked the ground.
That it is not always safe to follow a neighbor's lead was the moral underlying a tale of woe I heard to-day. It appears that a certain farmer had sown a paddock with grass seed, and in talking with his neighbor on the matter was recommended to use a certain kind of harrow which the latter spoke highly of. He didj but after finishing his harrowing he came to the conclusion that he had put his seed in too deep, which was borne out later by the non-appearance of the seed. Meeting his neighbor some time afterwards he mentioned the matter to him, saying that the harrows were doubtless ell'ective on certain land, but in his case they buried the seed too deep. "Ah," remarked his neighbor, "that may be the reason why in that paddock I sowed in oats and grass last year, and on which I used these harrows, the grass same on so poorly. I won't use them this year after what you've told me." The first farmer is now moralising on the truism that one pays for one's experience.
