SPORTING.
PIASTER SOULT. I By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, October 26. blaster Soult has returned to Sydney and leaves tor New* Zealand to-day. He was knocked about a good deal in the race for the Caulfield Cup. His trainer consequently decided to abandon the balance of his'engagements. FLEMINUTON TRAINING NOTES. Flemington, October 20. Lady Lucy did twelve furlongs in 2min 47sec., Flavian eleven furlongs in 2min 30sec., and Maltine half a mile in 53sec. MELBOURNE CUP SCRATCIIINGS. Received 20, 7.5 p.m. Melbourne, October 20. Arbor and Antoine have been scratched for the Melbourne Cup,. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"). Danube is a champion. St. Toney may bo classed with the smart set. A two-vear-old worth following—Ormond's Miscount. I Whispered that Billy Young will pilot [ Oivoi in the New Zealand Cup.
After aa inglorious career in Australia l'ink Tn has been relegated to the stud,
The Poverty Bay Turf, Club's spring meeting opens to-day and will be concluded to-morrow.
Merrivonia is improving with every gallop and should get amongst the winners soon.
Bobrikoff has been turned out, and] his Stead Memorial Cup engagement looks lik? lapsing. Continuance has paid up for the Ilur-j dies at Gisborne but will have to be at his best to beat Rannihaeta and Co. More trouble! Weights for the'minor events at the Canterbury Metropolitan meeting are due about Friday. Ex-Maoriland prad.-pusher, L. 11. Hewitt and 'Stralian B. Carslake have each ridden 39 winners this season in far-away Austria.
Heard at Trentham before the Champion Plate: ''Danube will turn out a better horse than Multiform ever was." And it came from a good judge, too. Effort's withdrawal from spring engagements across the Tasman was rendered necessary through the New Zealander breaking a blood-vessel whilst training at Randwick. The Grand Xational hero, Paisano, figures in the Spring Handicap at Gisborne to-day with 9.3. If he scores, his army of worshippers will surely try to carry him shoulder-high across the lawn! I That expensive equine luxury, Golden Slipper, is still slipping her owner's "Goldens" with great violence. Latest is that G.S. cut up so badly at Caulfield that the pen was promptly put through her name for all engagements at the Melbourne Cup meeting. Mention of Cups reminds me—the Melbourne Cup will be decided on Tuesday next, November 1, and the New Zealand iCup comes up for decision on' the following Saturday. Directoire shaped like a third-rater at Trentham and is evidently a much overrated neddy. A foolish public, which threw much good money away on the | "moral," afterwards realised what a dashed poor judge it wis. The New Zealand jockey, Ben Deeley, was the only horseman to score more than once at the V.A.T.C. meeting, his successes being on Master Soult in the Eclipse Stakes and on Advantage in the "Moonga Handicap. The Referee savs: "Deeley can ride all right." Who doubts i it?
Heard in Wellington: "Yes, I'd like to have a sandwich and an Imperial, but I've got to ride 7-stone to-morrow." Who wouldn't be a jockey? Word from Hawke's Bay is to the effect that Multiple is in a bad way and is having a bad time of it fighting an attack of pneumonia. a Hector Gray rode four winners at the Wellington spring meeting, and Billy Price and C. Jenkins each won a double. Gray now leads the list of winning riders for the season.
Wimmera is one of the useful sort. A horse that is equally at home over a Northern Hurdles course or in a mile flflt race is worth keeping. Wimmera was punted on as a "moral" on Saturday, and after making practically all the running, staved off a challenge by Sir Tristram inside the distance and won comfortably. The crowd who sent Danube out favorite for the Champion Plate had a heap of excitement for their money. At the home turn Lady Medallist was out on her own and looked like collecting. Then Gray gave the colt his head and he came with a great burst, caught the mare a hundred yards from home and quickly placed the result right out of doubt. Had the distance been a couple of furlongs longer Danube would have won by moie, and it is quite on the cards that Greenwood's flier will reap a veritable harvest at Riccarton next month. Consequent on his forward running at Trentham, Bridge is now quoted favorite for the New Zealand Cup. Ingoda and Sir Antrim are being nibbled at and Diabolo still holds his ground. Punters are taking two risks: their horse may not win and their bookie may not pav out. The defection of Provocation from the Stewards Handicap was a windfall for the pencilled. Bidwill's colt was solidly supported prior to the Wellington meeting and rumors of wonderfuj wallops inflamed a very susceptible public to rush the horse for the Riccarton sprint race. However, Provocation is still sufferin" from his old infirmity and it will be just as well to keep your money in your pocket until von see "him with the colors up. Splendid acceptances have been received for the first day of the Masterton Racing Club's spring meeting, and if Trentham form pans out correctlv winners should not be hard to pick. Still ex-1 perienee teaches that even bets are not always •'•'dry" in prohibition district. Tihej meeting takes place on Friday and Saturday. But of that, anon. !
