A BANKRUPT MONEY-LENDER

LEAVES HIS CREDITORS TO CLEAR UP THE TANGLE. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Dunedin, Last, Night. A meeting of creditors in the estate of William Miller, a money-lender, who was declared bankrupt last week, and who is now missing., was held to-day. Over thirty creditors or their representatives were present. Mr. Fisher (Ollieial Assignee) said in the absence of the bankrupt, and consequently his inability to have a cheek made, it would be iinproper to place before the creditors any statement giving names and figures. At the time of the bankruptcy there were two creditors in possession of the ollice, and the furniture had been removed to an auction room for sale. He read a statement made by Air. Evans, who had been in Miller's employ.

Til the course of the statement Hvanst.i'ted that it was with the greatest dilficulty that he could obtnin from his employer necessary information to enable him to make up the hooks. He had never been given any information concerning Miller's dealings with yarinuproperties, and there was no record of these transactions for the last, three years. Lie knew Miller had been ban! pushed for money and a lot of his (Evans') time had been taken up in obtaining temporary loans for him by exchange of cheques, etc. lie (Kvans) never had anything to do with various bill transactions given to or by Miller., lie knew bills were lloa ting about but no particulars were furnished to him. In reply to a question, the Assignee said lie could not give particulars of the assets at present." There were book debts due to bankrupt. Mr. Moore said lie represented the creditors who held promissory notes from Miller. It appeared to him that Miller had got rid of a]} the security 'he could before he went away and that the assets must be small. The Official Assignee said some little time before the bankruptcy the balancesheet showed a surplus of CKlllii;. lie would like to see that balance now. (Chorus of creditors: ''Wo would we"). Mr. Esther: If the estate realises SIMM pence we will be lucky. It was resolved, 'That this meeting be adjourned to a later date to be iixe.l by the Assignee, who will make enquiries and furnish a report."
