A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hastings, Last Night. The Hawke's Bay Show opened in glorious weather to-day. The picturesque grounds presented an animated scene. Although the entries are slightly under those of last year, all classes of, live stock are of exceptional quality. The attendance was large for a first day, a noticeable feature being the presence of an increased number of farmers from the surrounding districts. Championships were awarded as follows: Shorthorn Bull.—Douglas McLean's Copper King. Ayreshire Bull.—Slack Bros.' Waitoitoi Gammie. Ayreshire Cow. —Slack Bros.' Duchess. Alderney Bull.—Paul Hunter's Oculist. Jersey Cow.—Paul Hunter's Oculist Rose. Holstein Fresin Cow.—Newton King's Nazli's Gem. Bull (yearling)—W. J. Lovelock's Clilfside Laddie. Polled Angus Bull.—W. J. Birehe's Thor. Polled Angus Cow—J. A. MacFarlane's Flower. Shorthorn Cow.—W. J. William's Lady Connaught. Romney Marsh Ewe and Lamb.—N. E. Allen. Hastings, Later.

The sheep classes are of exceptional quality, the best known exhibitors in the Dominion being represented. Cattle are above the usual standard, and competition is very keen. Shorthorns, are particularly good, the margin between the placed animals being extremely small. Further championship awards are: Shropshire ram, P. Cooper; Shropshire ewe with lamb, A. V. Collins; Southdown ram, Bros.; Southdown ewe with lamb, Nelson Bros.; Lincoln ram, W. Perry; Lincoln ewe with lamb, Mrs. J. D. Ormond; Ronrney ram W. Perry; Border Leicester rams, Mrs. J. D. Ormond; do. ewe, Mrs. J. D. Ormond; English Leicester ram, Douglas McLean; do. ewe, Douglas McLean; Hereford bull. George Wheeler's Crown Prince; draught sire (three years and upwards), E. J. Wharding's Baron Graceful; do. mare, Mrs. Ormond's. Berkshire boar (three years and upwards), Monckton and Fetch; Berkshire sow, J. H. Sellers.
