DISTRICT NEWS.
EGrMONT village. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The influenza epidemic has about run its course in our district, and most of those affected- are now convalescent, li tiie spell of fine weather which we have recently experienced continues, it should wipe out the last traces of this tenacious disease. Mr. E. Jj'ocock has been running the creamery during Mr. S. Carter's illness. Mr. Carter lias, now resumed his duties. On Thursday night, owing to the boisterous weather, there was a meagre attendance at the fortnightly meeting of the Debating Society. Mr! G. F. Dewihirst occupied the chair. Mr. L. Jury was elected a member of the Society. Hie programme for the evening was impromptu speaking. The following sub- 1 jects were debated witli vigor, nearly everyone present speaking on each suli—'"ls the freehold tenure desirable ?'• "Should the Government issue a State Bank note?" "Is the world growing bet-i ter?" "Should imprisonment be the sole! punishment for sly grog -selling?" On Thursday, the 27th, the "Novice" Debate" will be held, and on the following Thursday the open night. The Boxing Club had an excellent muster 011 Saturday night, several, participants coming in from Hillsborough. It is to be hoped that they will continue to patronise our local club. There is I some talk of raising a team to enter for j the tournament at New Plymouth on the; Show night. i The Ciickpu Club are holding a social evening i„ the Hall on Thursday next to raise funds for the purchase of material for the coming season. j
