MR HINE'S CHARGES

.FORMULATED BEFORE THE OOM- | MITTEE. ( I TO BE REFERRED TO SUPREME COURT JUDGES. I - By Telegraph. —Press Association. | Wellington, Wednesday. _ The committee appointed to investigate 'Mr. .T. B. Hine's charges met this morning, when Mr. Hine formulated hi 3 charges as follows: (1) That Mr. Charles Edwin Major, "while a member of Parliament in 1004, sold to the Government the property of Mr. Frederick Bayly At Toko, and that ha received commission. (2) That Mr. Major and Mr. Walter 'Symes, or one of them, received commission from Mr. Alfred Bayly, for selling property at Toko to the Government. (3) That Mr. Symes in 100 C and 1008 charged and received from a numher of West Coast lessees of native lands commissions or sums of money for preparing and conducting petitions to Parliament oa their behalf. (4) That Mr. Syißes in 1005, while an election was in prospect, in which Mr. Symes intended to become a candidate, being then a member, did threaten a certain newspaper that he would use his influence as member to prevent Government advertisements from being given to the said newspaper unless he received the support or was treated to his own satisfaction by the said newspaper during the election contest. (5) That Mr. Thomas Kennedy Macdonald, in or about 1904 am 1 subsequent years, while a mem! a- of the Legislative Council, cither alone or with his then partner, a local agent, conducted the sale to the Government of the property of John Motley Leigh, at Nainai, and properties of other persons, and received from Leigh and vendors of other properties commissions or other sums of money, and divided same. (<3) That Mr. Henare Kaihau, in or about ]'9o6„ conducted the sale to the Government of a portion of .the Te Akau Block and received from the vendors a commission or other sum of money. - 51' - Mr. Hine said 1 he also had other charges of which he had information, but it was not easy to get persons to give evidence, so he did not think it ■ fair to make specific allegations iStrpflsent, but asked to be allowed to formulate such charges later if necessary.-^— On the motion of Sir was decided that a copy of" the charges be sent to each of the persons mentioned therein.
