OUTBREAK AT TAUMARA^UI. EXTENSIVE DAMAGfy^ By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Wednesday, The Star's Taumarunui correspondent wires that a disastrous fire took place at 2.1 a a.m., destroying the prettflses of Patterson (photographer), Cairney (fruit and lollies), Gardner's billiard saloon, Thwaites (chemist), Slattery (hairdresser), Cockfield (fruiterer), Fisller and Co. (butchers), liiely's Crown supperrooms, and Meyenberg's cycle depot. It supposed that the fire commenced is Kiely's. Some goods were saved, but most of the stocks were destroyed. Barnett's building was badly burned. The stock was removed, but is practically valueless. A lot of goods were removed from Fanthorpe's. He suffers heavy loss by removal. The fire brigade woriced splendidly. Only supreme efforts solved Summer's private hotel. The insurances are unknown. Many of the suffeversilare uninsured. A light wind and showers prevented further bosses.

DETAILS OF LOSSES. Auckland, Last Night. The fire at Taumarunui commenced in Gardner's billiard saloon. It Spread to Cairney's, Thwaite's and Patterson's shops, and seriously threatened' Simmons' hotel, which was only saved by the strenuous efforts of the fire brigade. The block destroyed was mainly compbsed of old buildings. Had there been any wind the whole side of the street must have gone. The insurances as far as ascertained are as follows:—Simmonds, Patterson, Tliwaites and Cairney, £2OO (loss £400); Coc-kfield and Slattery, no insurance; Cairney, £75 over stock; Simmonds, on hotel £6OO (damage £50); iMevenberg, £SO in the State Office (loss* £7of; Kielv, £IOO in the New Zealand office (loss £400); Gardner's saloon. £750 in the Victoria, £295 in the Sun, and £2OO oyer tables, owned by Barton and McGill (loss estimated at £250). Mr. Barnett sustained serious loss, but his insurance is not available. Mr. Fanthorpe sustained losses by removal of stock ant damage to premises. The buildings destroyed were 1 hose occupied by Messrs' Patterson, Tliwaites, Caiinev, Kiely, Gardner, Slattery, Cockfield, Fisher and Meyenberg. Lack water and lire-fi,silting appliances were responsible for the heavy losses. It is estimated the-total loss is about £3OOO.
