STRATFORD NOTES.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night, A meeting of the Executive of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce was held last night. Present: Messrs. S. James (chairman), N. King, J. Hewitt, AY. H. Young, and W. Cargill. Complaints from Messrs. Morris and Simpson in regard to the unsatisfactory manner in which the Railway Department forwarded goods to Douglas were received. It appears that it is the custom of the Department to hold goods which weigh more than 5 cwt. until there were sufficient to fill a truck. It was decided that Messrs. Young, Cargill and the secretary be a committee to communicate with the Traffic Manager on the matter after having seen the local stationmaster.

Mr. A. Meredith wrote asking the Chamber to urge the Postal Department to have the Huiakama, Strathmore and Te Wera mails sorted on the mail trains, so as to ensure the delivery at Te Wera on the same day. The secretary stated he understood no objection was taken by the Department to this, and it was resolved to advise M. Meredith to apply to the Department. Mr. A. Meredith wrote stating that a meeting of settlers were in favor of the alteration of the train service on Tuesdays, tout were not in accord with the suggestion for the alteration on Saturdays. The secretary drew the Executive's attention to a statement made by Mr. J. McCluggage that the Chamber of Commerce had not given any assistance to the settlers' efforts to secure a grant for the metalling of the Ohura road.—The secretary stated that a letter had been received from Mr. McCluggage on the matter, in which he stated he was forwarding a copy of the resolution, and asking the assistance of the Chambers. Unfortunately, Mr. McCluggage forgot to endorse the resolution. Knowing that the matter would be supported by the Chamber, the secretary saw Mr. McCluggage, mentioned the matter, and, after some consideration, invited Mr. McCluggage to attend, assuring him that the resolution would be supported. Mr. McCluggage said he would attend, but did not put in an appearance.

GENERAL. The Stratford School Committee have decided to send a copy of the return of the voluntary subscriptions and contributions raised by committees in the majority of the boards of the Dominion to the Taranaki M's.P., asking them to urge upon the Minister the desirability of paying over the capitation grant withheld last year. It is very significant at the present time, when so much is heard about wha't the Government is doing for education throughout the Dominion, that I the return alluded to, and which does not include all the education boards of the Dominion, should show that £15,000 has been raised 'by voluntary subscriptions, irrespective of labor, in the form of working bees, etc., given by the committees. The Minister for Education, now on his way to .South Africa, was always fond of remarking at public functions that his. Department believed in helping those who helped themselves| It is to be hoped that this principle is acquiesced in by the officials, and that as the committees have done their share the Department will do theirs. Mr. Frederick Styles, an old settler of the district, died at Ngaere to-day. The iStratford High School have entered 15 pupils for the Junior National Scholarship, 13 for .the Board Junior Scholarship, B for the Bayly Memorial Scholarship, 10 for the Board's senior Scholarship, 8 for the Junior Civil Service, and 17 for the senior free places. A man named Jackson was severely burnt about the face yesterday through an explosion of some blasting powder which he was carrying. He was admitted to the Stratford Hospital. As the outcome of a meeting of the Borough Council last night in lvgard to the offer of the Electric Light Company for the sale of the .goodwill, the company I will be asked to meet the Borough J Council in conference prior to the next meeting of the Council. At the annual meeting of the Ngaere Dairy Company yesterdav, Messrs. Wm Morrison, G. Styles and f. Coleman were elected directors, and Mr. P. F. Ralfe auditor. Mr. Morrison was re-elected chairman of directors. Five suiineas was donated as a special prize to die Stratford A. & P, Association for the best pen of five heifer calves for dairy purposes. It was decided to recommend the directors that the company should undertake herd-testing, and to make enquiries as to the best means of pasteurising whey.
