ANTARTIC EXPEDITION.
SAFE AT LYTTELTON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The Siberian ponies and dogs which are to be used by Captain Scott's Antarctic expedition arrived in Lyttelton by the Maori this morning, having been transhipped from the Moana at Wellington. The animals were in charge of Mr. C. H. Meares and Lieut. W. M. Bruce, .R.N.R., who had with them one attendant for the dogs and two grooms. On arrival at the port the animals were transferred to a lighter and taken over to Quail Island. They were landed on the jetty and the horses released from the boxes in which they had been confined for fifty days. The ponies were rather shaky on their legs after their long journey, but enjoyed a good roll. They will be confined to the stock yards for a few days and then let out in the fields. The dogs are occupying kennels at the quarantine station. Mr. Meares will spend some time at the Island, and will have charge of the animals generally, but the attendant and the grooms will reside on the island for the time being.
