LADIES* TOURNAMENT ENDED. HAWKE'iS BAY RETAINS CHAMPIONSHIP. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Nelson, Last Night. The weather remained beautifully fine for the conclusion of the Ladies' Hockey Tournament. The attendance numbered about 3000. The results of the day's play were as follows: Greymouth v. Wanganui—A draw, no score. Auckland v. Otago— A. draw, z ail. Hawke's Bay defeated Nelson by 1 goal to nil. This was the deciding match of the tournament, and one of the test ever seen here. Both ' sides played determinedly, tout in the best of tj/jgl The teams were faily evenly iMfcled. In the first spell two scores were averted by the narrowest margin. Play had returned from Hawke's Bay | territory to the Nelson circle, and hard i hits iby Miss .Smith struck the post, i Shortly afterwards, Miss Emms (Nel-1 eon) had a similar experience first, and I the spell ended with no score. In the ] second half there was a fine exhibition

of hockey, and no score until within twelve minutes of time, when Mi~s Pitt shot a good goal. Nelson's endeavors to equalise were unsuccessful. As a result of the match, Hawke's Hay retains the championship, the points 'being as follows: Hawke's Bay 18. Wairarapa 13, Nelson 13, Auckland 12, Wanganui 11, Taranaki 0, Greymouth 6, Wellington A 5, Wellington B 2, Westport 1. Several teams had another match to play, but the result of the Hawke's BayNelson contest makes it unnecessary to prolong the tournament. The Hawke's Bay team received an ovation on leaving the field. WELLINGTON VICTORIOUS OVER AUCKLAND. Wellington, Last Night. In t!ie contest for the Hockey Shield, the Wellington holders defeated Auckland by 3 goals to I, after a fast and game, in fine weather. In the opening five minutes, Loader scored for Wellington, and a second point was added by C. iStrack. A big effort to equalise the scores towards the end of the first spell saw Mason shoot accurately. G. Strack obtained Wellington's third goal from a penalty bully awarded for obstruction on the part of an Aucklander towards the close of the game.
