AUCKLAND NEARLY BEATEN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The final Ranfurly Shield match of the season was played here to-day between the representatives of the Canterbury and Auckland Rugby unions, in glorious weather and before ibout HO,OOO people, the game resulting, alter one of the most exciting finishes witnessed here, in a win for Auckland by 6 points to 4. In the first spell Doell potted a.fine goal for Canterbury, and there was no further score until ten minutes from time, when Harrison scored for Auckland, O'Leary missing an easy kick. The Auckland forwards were playing a desperate game, and about, a couple of minutes before time Wylie scored near the corner from a forward rush. The Auckland forwards were very rough at times, and the visitors suffered, Bain having to leave the field, while quite a long stoppage was occasioned through Butchers being hurt. WELLINGTON v. OTAGO. Wellington, Last Night. The football match, Wellington "v. Otago, resulted in a win for Wellington by 19 to 6. The game was a very even one, despite the scores. The Otago forwards more than held their own, but the backs were somewhat inferior to the local combination. Play was confined for the most part of the game to the forwards, very little back play being indulged in. The Ibaok play of the Wellington team stood them in good stead, and was mainly responsible for the victory. WELLINGTON B v. MARLBOROUGH. 1 Blenheim, Last Night. The representative football match, Wellington B team and Marlborough, was played to-day in fine weather. The game ended in a draw, 6 points each. Wellington obtained a try and a goal from a mark, and Marlborough two penalty goals. MANAWATU BEATS HOROWHENUA. iPalmeraton North, Last Night. Manawatu defeated Horowhenua at Rugby football yesterday, after a most remarkable match. Manawatu, through influenza, etc., started with eight emergencies, and Horowhenua had a strong team. The emergencies played remarkably well, and after Horowhenua had reached 11 to 3, Manawatu kept trying, and finally pulled the game off in the last round by turning the defence into attack and scoring an unexpected try, which was converted. WAIRARAPA WIN FROM BUSH. Masterton, Last Night. In the senior football rep. match, Wairarapa defeated Bush here on Saturday by 37 to 3 after a very one-sided game —six tries, three converted and a "penalty, to an unconverted try. THE ASSOCIATION GAME. BROWN SHIELD. AUCKLAND DEFEATS WELLINGTON. Wellington, Last Night. The contest between Auckland and' Wellington Association representatives yesterday resulted in the loss of the Brown Shield 1 by Wellington, the northern team winning by two goal* to nil. The game was fairly even in the first spell. Auckland's first goal was obtained by Gardner, after preliminary work by Whittle and Borne. Wellington forwards lacked combination, the team having lost several good players, and the Aucklanders were easily superior in footwork. A mistake bv Roberts, Wellington, gave Auckland the opportunity for the second score. At the commencement of the second, spell a goal was landed by Boyne, Webster, Sole, Reckerby, Marshall and Oldnall, in goal, played well for the winners.
