STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. . Minor alterations are proceeding at the Stratford railway station. A lamp room has been erected, the old lamp room is being turned into a porters' room, and a commencement with the enlargement of the luggage room has been made. Mr. W. J. Newton, manager of the Stratford Electrical Company, left Stratford for Wellington yesterday to make 'final arrangements for the new plant for the company. At present, Stratford is known as the centre of a dairying district, and there are few who have /realised the vatt i possibilities of the hinterland as a sheep ] country. Handicapped by bad roads, the development of the great expanse of country stretching between Stratford and the Main Trunk line has progressed but slowly. The extension of the railway line brings into touch areas 01 country hitherto regarded as almost inaccessible. ' To stock this land is causing a demand for sheep, and in addition to the number of trucks which have durj ing the past few weeks come this way, another 29 trucks arrived' yesterday | from Marton for Te Wera. • The spring weather of the past two days is having a beneficial effect on the gardens, and bulbs are now commencing to make the flower beds gaily coloured.
