COMMANDANT OF THE FORCES
COLONEL GODLEY APPOINTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. _ In the House of Representatives this evening, the Prime Minister announced that he had received a cable informing him that the King had approved of the appointment of Colonel Godley as Commandant of the New Zealand Defence Forces, with the rank of MajorGeneral. Replying to Mr. Massey, the Premier said he could not definitely state when, Major-General Godley would arrive ini the Dominion, but he would know in ft | few days. The salary was £ 1000 a year, with house allowance of £2OO. He would take the place of four officers,! who had been receiving £525 a year,, each. The term of appointment was for five years. . Replying to Mr. Allen, Sir Joseph Ward said *he r.ew commandant would have supreme command of the forces, and the fullest responsibility in con-j section with matters appertaining to _b». Department. When the Defence Bill, came before the House he would make a fuller statement on the subjeot.
