STEAMER'S NARROW ESCAPE. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Sydney, September 3. Early this morning the Island steamer Makambo, while departing, suddenly assumed a-n alarming list to starboard, the rail being level with the water. She returned to the wharf, and the passengers were ordered off and the cargo unloaded. It is thought to be undamaged.
MAIL COACH SWEPT AWAY. Melbourne, September 3. The Alexander mail coach, while crossing the Goulburn River, was swept away. The horses, mails, and coach were lost, and the driver had a narrow escape. A WOLFRAM DISCOVERY. Brisbane, September 3. A rich discovery of wolfram is reported at Dingo Mountain. A rush has set in. DROUGHT IN NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney, September 3. The continued dry conditions are causing apprehension regarding spring prospects.
THE DIPHTHERIA EPIDEMIC. Sydney, September 3. The diphtheria epidemic is continuing. During August there were 32J) cases. SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY. Sydney, September 3. The Saturday Half-holiday Act operates from October 22. Most of the employers have agreed to pay wages earlier in the week. A RECORD JUMP. Melbourne, September 3. At the show, Sunshine jumped 6ft lOin a record for the ground. TRAMCAR COLLISION. Adelaide, September 3. A tram collided with a trolly. The driver of the latter was killed, and the motor-man is not expected to recover. A NEW ZEALANDER'S DEATH. Sydney, September 8. Ernest James, supposed to be a New Zealander, was killed at a Gilgindra sawmill. A log rolled on him.
