Five hundred and twenty-six thousand persons have so far visited the Anglo-Japanese Exhibition. NATIONAL DEFENCE. London, September 2. Three hundred and fifty-seven sdmirals and generals support the appeal for a loan of £.100,000,000 for national defence purposes. PENNY IPOSTAGE. London, September 2. The London' Chamber of Commerce supports the proposal for penny postage between England and France. FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE. London, September 2. The Board of Agriculture announces they are satisfied that the recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease has been eradicated, and all restrictions are now withdrawn. MAGNIFICENT PAGEANTS. London, September 2. Sir Herbert Tree's revival of "Henry VIII." in a series of magnificent pageants has proved a great artistic triumph.
EUOHARISTIC CONGRESS. Vancouver, September 2. Cardinal Vanutelli, the Papal Legate, accompanied by Cardinal Logue, had a brilliant reception at Quebec. ALASKA'S MINERAL RESOURCES. New York, September 2. Mr. Wicgersham, United States At-torney-General, is visiting 1 Alaska, and is surprised at its wonderful mineral resources. He hopes to take immediate steps to open the vast coal measures and the construction of a railway. BEAUREPAIRE IN RUSSIA. St. Petersburg, September 2. Beaiirepaire won the 500 metres championship of Finland in six minutes fifty-six seconds, beating his own record.
LACROSSE TOURING TEAM. Ottawa, September 2. Lacrosse officials favour M'lntosh's suggestion that the Newminster champion team should make a tour of Australia. A GOVERNOR'S FEAT. Ottawa, September 2. Lord Grey is the first Governor-Gen-eral who has succeeded in reaching Hudson's Bay overland.
