THE SUGAR MONOPOLY
COMMISSION OF ENQUIRY PROPOSED. By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright Melbourne, August 26. In the (House 9f Representatives Mr. Higgs, in applying for a Sugar Commission, said that sugar cost £l3 16s 2d per ton to produce, and was sold at £2B per ton. The commission could ascertain the real profit by the company. Farmers felt that they should have a national refinery. All the speakers on both sides agreed that a commission was necessary. All referred to the sugar company as an octopus. The only differences of opinion were as to the personnel of the commission. The d°bate was adjourned till September 8. |
