THE VETO CONFERENCE
SPEECH BY SIR EDWARD GREY. By Cable. —lTuaS Association. —Cojiyiiglit Received August '26, 9.30 p.rti. London, August 26. Sir Edward 'Grey, Minister for Foreign Affairs, speaking at Berwick, said that if the Veto Conference showed any possibility of solving the question by agreement, the country would be delighted, providing the settlement was fair. Otherwise the Liberals would resume the fight in the same spirit as at last election. Justifying the Budget, he contrasted the growth of trade in free-trade England, and the increased agitation in protectionist countries against the cost of living. (He emphasised the simultaneous increase in the Socialist vote, and declared that protection was a shortcut to Socialism.
