Mr. Taft has had an important interview with Mr. Sherman, who declared ho had no intention of withdrawing from the Chairmanship in Mr. (Roosevelt's favor, and promised that the New York Convention platform would strongly approve of Mr. Taft's administration. Mr. Sherman urged Mr. Taft to write a letter for early publication, to sound the keynote of the Congressional campaign, especially upholding the Payne tariff. He pleaded for an old fashioned Republican campaign on old fashioned lines. It ia understood that Mr. Taft has promised, but will frame a letter in accordance with his own judgment. It is also understood that Mr. Sherman and Mr. Taft agreed that it is impossible for Mr. Cannon to be re-elected to the Speakership. Progressive Republicans are viigorously working to control the New York Convention to secure Mr. Roosevelt's chairmanship. Mr. Roosevelt has arranged a strenuous speech-making tour, starting on the! 27th.
