The woman Valentine Moiser was barged at the Supreme Court to-day ith cruelly ill-treating a child of four ears and ten months. ,It was stated in vidence that child was locked in the ouse, which was subsequently discover* d to be on fire. The child was rescued romUhe bed to which it was tied, risoner, in her evidence, denied wilful The sores on the child 'ere, she said, due to irritation of the tiii and an accident. The string round lie child's neck was left after she had >een playing horses with her brother. The child was tied at the back of her Iress to keep her from getting matches, 'risoner added that her husband had deerted her, and that he home was pov-a'ty-stricken, and she had been ill lierielf.' The case is proceeding.

Ohristchurch, Last Night., At the Supreme Court, William Stevns was sentenced to lline months' for ssaulting a married woman. John Ishrwood, convicted of perjury, was «• landed for sentence. Ernest Philip terlyn, who had been convicted on two harges of forgery, appeared for senence, but was remanded till "to-morrow. DWEJDIN SESSIONS.

t Dunedin, Last Night. / At the Supreme Court to-day Ernest Vincent Pitcher was charged with, robbing David Henley of £lO at Ophir, and [with using personal violence. The defence was. that a struggle between the two men was the outcome of an improper proposal iby Henley. Accused was acquitted, but the jury expressed >tbe opinion ithat there was no blemish on Henley's character.
