LAND FOR THE POOR MAN.

ALLEGATION BY MR. HINE, M.P. REFUTED BY THE LAND BOARD. At yesterday's meeting of the. Taranaki Land Board, Mr. McCluggage referred to a statement made in the House by Mr. J. B. Mine, M. P. for Stratford, as published hi Hansard, which read as follows:—"In Taranaki applicants have been refused admission to the land ballots because they were not in possession, of £SOO, and if you are going tO' stop a man who is not in possession of £.500 from obtaining land under the Land for Settlement system, we say it is of no use to the poor man." Mr. Heslop moved: "That there is not tlie slightest foundation for such a misleading statement, which is absolutely* contrary to fact; and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Right Hon. the Minister of Lands." Seconded by Mr. Rattenbury.

After each member had spoken on the subject, the motion wag put and carried. The Commissioner refrained from voting, and Mr. Kennedy voted against the motion, objecting to its political significance, and urging that the Board's purpose could be semd sufficiently by communicating personally with Mr. Hine on the matter.
