At the Supreme Court to-day. a young man named James M'lnlyre *vaß ( sentenced to four years' imprisonment on a charge of stealing jewellery from j ilie Windsor Hotel. ALLEGED WHOLESALE FORGERY. Christchurch, Last Night. At the Supreme Court, Ernest Phillip Berlyn was charged with the theft of j various sums of money amounting to, £57 17s, the property of W. Acton i Adams, of Molesworth station. The jury, ! after four and a half hours Ernest Phillip Berlyn was further) ' charged with forging a cheque on the |New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Coy.) i for £4O, purporting to have been drawn| by R. J. Boddington. Further, with I stealing £4O, alse with forging a cheque 'on the same company, drawn by R. J.J ;Boddington for £4 by altering it to, make it appear to be a cheque for * >4; also with stealing a cheque for £4, the ! property of W. Acton Adams; also with obtaining £54 by false pretences from! 'the company by representing that the forged cheque for £54 was a good «ia valid one. Accused was convicted but sentence was deferred. |
DUNEDIN SESSIONS. Dunedin, Last Night. I At the Supreme Court to-day, John Keen was acquitted on a charge of assaulting a young woman. . Jas. Lyndhurst was convicted on a charge of stealing a trap, a set of, harness and a buggy rug valued at £l9 ss, the property of D. Sutherland, and a horse valued at £l2, the property of William Ivirkland. Sentence was deffirrcdj John Michael Seigrue was convicted on a charge of assaulting a Chinese at Lauder and was admitted to probation, being ordered to pay £lO towards the cost of the prosecution.
