TARANAKI LAND BOARD.

__ —• MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki Land Board held its ordinary monthly meeting yesterday. Present: Messrs. F. Simpson (Commissioner of Crown Lands), J. Musiop, Kartenbury, McCluggage, and W. L. ivenneuy." TRANSFERS. I It was decided to treat applications ar transfers as in committee. Mr. W. G. I Mr. T. C. Fookes waited on the Board with reference to an application by Messrs. Speck Bros, to transfer to 0. S. Jackson, which had been approved at the previous meeting of t'he Board. He explained the position of Messrs Speck Bros, with regard to a sub-lease to a Mr. Willcock, which had been previously approved by the Board and the Minister, but which had lapsed as Wiliwock had not completed the transfer.—No report was made from the committee.

FREEHOLD. The following applied for permission to convert their tenures to freehold: John Routley, sec 96, blk 10, Ngaere; Henry Leat, sec 1 and 2, blk 7, Omona. — Approved. LEASES TO ISfeUJi'. The following farm settlers applied for their leases to issue: Angus Mct*dl, sec 11, blk 2, Aria; Arthur W. Holland, sec 13, blk 10, Ohura; Henry C. Christensen, sec 24, blk 3, Ohura; Alexander L. McPhee, sec 5, blk 12, Aria.—Leases will be issued accordingly. NON-COMPLIANCE. H. T. Twiss, ranger, reported on the improvements effected by M. X. Jolt on sec 15, blk 8, and sec 3, blk 9, Mimi, shewing deficiency.—Resolved, that the transfer be refused, and that the selector be notified to show cause at the next meeting of the Board why his interest should not be forfeited. The Board, in answer to an application by G. C. Cooper for a re-hearing of the decisiento forfeit sec 10, blk 13, Waro, for non-improvement, resolved that it saw no reason to alter the former decision. H. F. Chubb wrote that he was compelled to forfeit sec 1, blk 12, Mapara. — Section forfeited accordingly. The following selectors were reported to have failed to comply with the conditions of residence and improvements: A. Schultz, sec 1, blk 15, \>nura; uonresidence and deficient improvementsNotice to reside immediately, and six months granted in which to effect improvements. L. McKinnon, sec 1, blk 3, Heao; nonresidence. —Notice to reside in six months. I E. E, Turner, sec 5, blk 11, Ohura; j lon-residence. —Notice to reside in six lonths. W. Goodwin, sec 9, blk 11, Ohura; on-residence.—No action taken. J. and R. Morris, sec 2, blk 13, Ohura; on-residence.—Deferred for further enuiry. >„. A. and F. Roth, see 5, blk 15, Ohura; non-residence. —Resolved that selectors be notified, and notice be given to the Superintendent of intention to forfeit. IL. Nairn and iS.'lLord, sec 4, blk li>, Omona; non-improvement. Resolved, that the section be declared forfeit. W. H. Sproull, sec 2, blk 8, Omona; non-improvement.—Six months extension granted. • E. P. Gould, sec 3, blk 8, Omona; deficient improvements. —'Six months' extension granted. J. Hunt, sec 3, blk 2, Opaku; non-resi-dence. —Lessee explained' that he was leasing a place at Mokoia, upon which his family were living. 'He was on the section at least six months in the year.

'Messrs. Spence and Stanford submitted a declaration by G. F. Wray of his inability to comply with the conditions of improvement of sec 11, folk 4, Ngatimaru—Transfer recommended for approval.

RANGERS' 'INSPECTION REPORTS. E. Tolme, ranger, reported on the inspection of 56 required amounted to £20,6 i! 1 . and improvements effected were estimated at £34,577. Nine selectors had not complied with improvement conditions, two were non-resident, and two others had not complied with either condition. 0. T. Twiss, ranger v reported on 21 holdings. Two selectors had not effected sufficient improvements'; four were not residing, and two had not complied in either of these respects.

Notice will be sent to those who have not complied. GENERAL. ' ■Mr. J. O'Connor waited on the Board and made application for a lease of portion of the Makahu township reservation, sec 33, folk 15, iNgatimaru.—A year-to-year tenancy was granted to Mr. O'Connor at a rental of £1 per annum, subject to termination by three months' notice, with no right to compensation for improvements. A. J. Whitaker applied for 12 months' extension of time to reside on sec 1, blk 2, Piopioteea West.—The application was refused, and the writer will 'be informed that the Board will at the expiration of the period of exemption enforce the conditions of hie lease. G. L. Young submitted a declaration as to loss of license of sec 4, blk 11, Upper Wiaitara, and applied for a new one to be issued.—New license to issue accordingly. iE. Tolme, Crown Lands ißanger, reported on the sections recently surveyed by Mr. W. Laing, district surveyor, in the Opatu block, Heoa S.'D.—Resolved, that the report as amended be adopted, and the land offered for selection under renewable lease and the Commissioner be directed to request the Department to expedite the offering, of the block, owing to the lateness of the season. The Undersecretary for (Lands advised that there was no power -to give effect to the disposal of part of the Forest Reserve, sec 113, blk 9, Opaku, to the Messrs. Parker Bras., except by special legislation, and made suggestions i for dealing with the matter.—Left in the hands of the Commissioner to deal with.

The claims of various persons to the valuation for improvements on sec 2, blk 1, Piopiotea West, were submitted. —(Resolved, that the disposal of the money be left in the hands of the Commissioner.

A plan of deviation of Kopuha road blocks 6, 10, and 11, Ohura, was laid on the table.—The title will be amended accordingly. The Commissioner reported that there was a balance of £lB 3s 9d of the valuation for improvements on sec 2, blk 7, Mimi, after payment of all monies due ifl the Crown by the previous tenant.—Resolved, that the whole of the late selector's interest be forfeited, and the money paid to revenue account.

The Ohura County Council asked that the resolution of the Board allocating £I2OO of accrued thirds towards the cost of erection of a bridge over the Ongarue river, Taumarunui, fie rescinded, the Government having undertaken the cost. —Action deferred for further information. 1 H.
