STORM AND FIRE. A doleful story of storm and fire was related by Captain Hoppe, of the Ger-man-Australian liner Kiel, upon the arrival of that vessel at Melbourne on her last trip. Fortunately the Kiel came through her trials practically unharmed, for, although the weather encountered was at times of a hurricane nature, the liner conducted herself admimbly. Almost from the hour when she left Algoa Bay until nearing the Victorian coast the Kiel was in almost uninterrupted mountainous seas, faint wreaths of smoke were observed issuing from the hold. A 'hasty examination disclosed break, one of the ship's hoses being played upon the spot, with tile result'that, the fire was soon subdued, to the great relief of all on board. How the fire originated is not known, but it is supposed to have been due to-friction, caased ©y {conflict with north-east gales. With the conditions all against her, the Kiel waa naturally considerably delayed, taking aibout 48 hours longer than usual to accomplish the run from the South African port.
