At an inque&t on the body ot r'red Whitelioi ;e, evidence showed that he was pai ally intoxicated on the evening of i-.igust 9, and left the vessel to get more beer. He was refused at the hotel, and was never seen alive again. It is assumed that he fell off the wharf. Tlie verdict returned was that he was accidentally drowned.

SHOT IN THE LUG. Palmers ton North, Monday. - Charles Bryan was shot in the leg yesterday while out rabbit shooting with his cousin, whose gun accidentally exploded. The shots were surgically removed and the patient is progressing favourably. •

BLOWN TO PIECES. Wellington, Monday. A fatal accident occurred at the Gear Meat Company's works at Petone this morning. Joseph Rhoddis, an elderly man, married, was opening up one of the digestors and neglected to take the precaution to see that the steam ajid gas had escaped, with the resut that he was blown thirty feet high and then fell to the floor head foremost and was killed instantly. Some of the clothing was found on a rafter against which he had been hurled with terrific force.

CAUGHT IN A BELT. I Waihi, Monday. A married man named George Henesy, employed at the Waihi Company's battery, Waikino, was fatally injured last night while adjusting the belting. He was caught in it and whirled round. He succumbed to his injuries this morning. A MARVELLOUS ESCAPE. Palmerston North, Monday. A half-caste named George fell off a train on Saturday night while passing from one carriage to another. He was picked up subsequently by men on a railway trcycle and was apparently uninjured.

RUN OVER BY A DRILL. Dunedin, Last Ni;;lit. A young man named Stephen Nolan, employed by 'P. Monyihan, farmer, of Middlemarcli, was. badly injured to-'day. He was working a team of horses in a drill, and while he was in front of the drill the horses bolted. The drill was pulled over him, and he sustained a fractured skull. He was unconscious at a late hour to-night.
