AUCKLAND v. HAWKE'S BAY.
NORTHERNERS' POOR DISPLAY.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. The Ranfurly Shield match between the representatives of the Auckland and Hawke's Bay Unions, was played here to-day, and resulted in a win for Auckland by 11 points to 3. The visiting team was a good combination, but the conditions were against good play, the ground and ball being very greasy, while a heavy shower of rain fell in the first spell. The game, apart from this, was tame, and no really brilliant play was I shown.
After to-day's exhibition, Auckland's chance of holding the Shield after the Wellington match seems small. Tries were scored for Auckland by Mageq, Wylie an,c[ Jjforse, Cunningham WW. McEwan scored a trjrj for Hawke's Bay. k .
MARLBOROUGH v. BULLER. Blenheim, Saturday. The Seddon Shield match, Marlborough v.' Buller, resulted in a win for Marlborough by 14 points to 8. HOROWHENUA "A" v. MANAWATU "A 7 Palmerston North, Last Night Horowhenua "A" defeated Manawatu "A" by 11 points (a penalty goal, a try and a converted try) to 8 points (two tries; and one converted) alter an extremely brilliant game at Levin. Horowhenua, with a number of members of the late Maori team, put up a splendid game, but Manawatu, wmch was recently playing indifferently, played in great style and had the best of the game ; leading up to the last few minutes, when the great pace and cleverness of the Maori backs resulted in a further try, which was converted. Though Manawatu continued to auack they could not improve their position.
MANAWATU "B" y. HOROWHENUA "B." , Palmerston North, Last Night. At Palmerston, Horownenua &" played Manawatu "B," when Manawatu won by 31 points to 6, after an extremely fast and open game, showing surprisingly good play on both sides.
As Manawatu "A" defeated ua earlier in the season, a deciding game will be played at Palmerston North, and the combined Horowhenua and Manawatu teams will challenge Wellington.
INANGAHUA BEATS BULLER "B." Westport, Last Night. Inangahua v. Buller "B" match, played yesterday, resulted in a win for the Hornier by nine points to five. POVERTY BAY BEATS BUSH UNION. Gisborne, Last Night. The representative Rugby match, Poverty Bay v. Bush Union, was played here on Saturday in fine weather «nd there was a large attendance. Alter an interesting game Victory finally rested with Povery Bay, who won by 17 points to 3. The homo Racks tvere very fast, and outclassed the visitors, who were, however, strong in the forward division. After the game, the teams dined together as the guests of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union. The visitors left for Napier in the Tarawera to-night. There is every prospect of the fixture becoming an annual one. WELLINGTON GAMES. Wellington, Last Night. Senior football matches yesteraay resulted as follows:—Oriental 12, Poneke 3; St. James 3. Athletic 0; Wellington 5, Victoria College 0; Southern 12, Melrose 0.
Old Boys won by default fmru Hutt. This gives Orientals the championsnip for the season.
In the school boys' match, Wairarapa defeated Wellington by five points to nil.
Owing to Ryan and Wilson being unable to accompany the representative team to Auckland, Bruce (St. oames), and Walshe (Poneke) were selected to fill the vacancies. To-day Walshe, however, notified the selectors that he would be unable to travel, and E. Roberts (St. James) will now make the trip. Tilyard (Poneke)'has been unable to obtain the necessary leave of absence and a further selection will be necessary.
THE HAWERA INCIDENT. INDIGNANT DENIAL. PalmeTston North, Last iNight. At a dinner at Levin, Mr. Fowler, president of the Horowhenua Union, spoke indignantly of the charges ; brought against the Manawatu players at Hawera. He said he was with them at the time, and the charges were wholly false, and the most disgraceful thing he had ever heard in football, making him ashamed to have been once a Taranaki man. The Taranaki Rugby Union management committee held a meeting in Hawera on Saturday, ajid took the evidence of Mr. Anderson (secretary of the Hawera Football Club) concerning the actions and statements attributed to him. The proprietor of the Egmont Hotel was also interviewed concerning in complaints made about the conduct of the Manawatu team during their stay at his hotel.
