Yesterday was a "veil letter' uay in Wellington by reason oi the great en-, thusiasm displayed m suuscnomg towards tlie Mayoress' tund lor the erection of the Children's Hospital. it was the Ward Comeuy Company's day from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m. Tue com-' pany went about the streets on a motor, lorry with a piano, and sang songs and indulged in patter at various corners. Not] withstanding tiiat rain fell heavily, these piucky people stuck to then- task! and kept themselves and the puulic in the greatest good humour, ihe per-' lonnei's were greeted by showers of coin' as well as showers of rain, .nu «u»keied £lO4. . At 2 o'clock, when the Ward Coin-' pauy's beiielit matinee commenced, the' Opera House was packed, and a nrst 1 class variety peiioniianee was given, which lasted tin 5.30. Then the Alayor. and Alayoress appeared on ine si«ige,| and Air. Wilford announced that during 1 the performance money nad been subscribed to buy presents lor Aliss Grace Palotta and Air. Hugh Ward, who had done so much for the hospital tund. The •Alayoress then handed .o Aliss Palotta. a handsome jewel case i.iid Air. Ward a! gold cigarette case as small tokens oi' esteem from the citizens of Wellington. Aliss Palotta was too affected to say more than "Thank you! We just love to do this for the children!" Air. Ward announced the financial results of hisi company's efl'orts that day, aamely: 1 Street collections, 3.104; j. V ic of pro-1 grammes and photos, £l3 lbs S)d; sale of sweets (made by Wellington lsuies, and packed by them in boxes, the covers' of which bore autographs of memners] of tlie company, £47 13s 4d; pro-1 I gramme advertisements, £45 j Alat- 1 inee, £249 15s 7d; total £4OO 2s Bd. Air. Ward then handed to Airs. Wilford a. cheque for £4OO 2s - Bd, making, with his personal cheque for £IOO, the tuial of £560 2s Bd. The Alayor stated that this cheque brought the total fund to just over £4300, so that they would now be able to claim the £SOO promised by a citizen as soon as the fund reached that amount. Later in the evening it was announced that the £SOO was available, vno donors •being Air. and Airs. T. G. Alaciu chy.
Thus the fund has reached a uital exceeding £SOOO. The audience at the matinee cheered the Ward Company again and again, and there was another scene of enthusiasm when the company concluded its season in the evening. At the close of the periormance the audience demanded a little speech from Mr. Ward, and the proceedings ended by the performers and the audience singing "Auld Lang Syne," the audience wildly cheering the company.
