Mr. Neil McLean, one of the contractors for the Arthur's Pass tunnel, states that the heading at the Otira end is advanced over a mile and the concrete arching about three quarters of a mile. .The rate of progress averages 70ft. weekly, which is considered satisfacotry considering the hard rock being driven through. The" heading at the Bcaley end is advanced 215 chains and the concrete arching will be kept up as close as possible. The recent frosty weath •. r has enchained the water utilised 'or driving the pelton wheels, and at the Bealey end. the punch bowl is -frozen solid and work has had to be suspended.
