INCOME TAX CASE.
WHAT IT WILL COST BOWRON BROS. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Christchurch, Friday. The amount of tax short paid by 'sowron Bros, has to be assessed by the Department, but an opportunity will be given the firm to raise an objection bei'ore a Magistrate. The department demands income tax on £44,905, being the difference between tihe taxable balance according to the department's figures and the amount shown in the return. The amount of tax claimed is £2248. A penalty of ten per cent, is added for late payment, and the penalty provided in the Act is £6,744. When a fine of £IOO and court costs are added, the amount to be paid reaches nearly £9500. It is understood the charges against the firm concerning returns for 1906 and 1907 will be called at the Magistrate's Court on Monday.
