AT A STANDSTILL. Ca.ble.—-Press Association.—Copyright ■New York, July 19. The central Vermont railway system is at a standstill. The men struck in sympathy with the Grand' Trunk malcontents. There are a thousand strikers west of Detroit. An early settlement is expected. THE MEN SCORE. Received July 20, 10.30 p.m. 'New York, July 20. The Pennsylvania railway men obtained ten hours with full pay. The company would not give eleven hours' pay for* ten hours, as demanded. EXTENSIVE EFFECTS. TROUBLE LIKELY. Received July 21, 0.40 a.m. Ottawa, July 20. Mr. Hays, president of the Grand Trunk railroad, stated that the increases offered to the men averaged 18 per cent., with further advances when the Grand Trunk Pacific was completed in 1913. This and arbitration was refused. The Daily Mail's Montreal correspondent reports that eleven thousand are idle, including seven thousand employees in the workshops. IReuter reports that a large force of special constables has been assembled at Montreal to cope with emergencies. The dislocation of business is widespread. Booth's pulp paper-mills at Ottawa are closed, owing to lack of transport. Two thousand workers are idle.
The Times' Toronto correspondent reports that the object of the Grand Trunk strike is to secure a standardisation of wages and working rules such as prevail on the eastern American railways. The Minister of Labor has offered *to mediate, and Mr. Hays is willing to accept the offer.
BIG DEATH-ROLL. New York, July 19. The railroads of the United States increased their earnings last year by £19,000,000. The number of passengers killed during the year was 8722, and 95,626 were injured.
