THE AUSTRALIAN STORM
DAMAGE TO SHIPPING. By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright Sydney, July 20. During the storm the boat of Joseph Climens, fisherman, capsized in the harbor, and he was drowned. The yacht Astria was swept from her lashing and smashed on the rocks. The small steamer Stella was thrown on the wharf, smashed, and sunk. An aeroplane, just completed by a resident at Croydon, in a shed, was destroyed. The aeroplane took its only flight, landing in a yard some distance away in a broken condition.
SETTLERS LEAVE THEIR HOMES. GREAT AREA FLOODED. WATER FALLING. Received July -20, 10.30 p.m. Sydney, Last Night. The Nepean flood is receding. The flood in the Hawkesbury river is the highest in ten years. A wide area of Hats round the Windsor high reaches of the river are inundated, and serious damage to the outstanding maize and other crops has been done. Some settlers were compelled to leave their homes. The water is now falling. Chinese and other gardens round Sydney and elsewhere suffered great damage. Hundreds of pounds' worth of vegetables were destroyed, and the scarcity has caused a big rise in prices. A STEAMER IN TROUBLE. Received July 20, 10.30 p.m. Sydney, Last Night. The weather on the coast has moderated. The Melbourne Company's steamer Hobart left for Melbourne last night, and while battling against the high seas broke the flange of her main steam pipe, and returned to port for repairs to-day.
