Marie Bourette has been sentenced to penal servitude for life for indirectly causing the death of an innocent mau. She put a packet of apparently harmless but really poisoned medicine on the doorstep of the house of one Doudieux. She had formerly refused to marry him, and hoped .to poison his wife. Doudieux, thinking the medicine harmless, administered it to Godard, a prominent tenor, who was his guest.
