PIRATES SEIZE AN ISLAND.

(PORTUGUESE RETALIATION. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Hongkong, July 14. A Portuguese cruiser gunboat dislodged the Chinese from t oiowan and sunk two junkloads of pirates who were attempting to escape. All were drowned. The Chinese Government has stationed a gunboat and 1200 soldiers in the vicinity of Colowan, who are awaiting developments.

The Governor of Macao (Portuguese settlement) has sent some guns and 200 infantry to Colowan. The incident arises out of 'the rival Portuguese and Chinese claims to the island, a recent negotiation with the Pekin Government having failed.
