A SCHOONER SUNK. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Monday. ■The schooner Saucy Kate, of 41 tons, owned by J. J. Craig and Co., Ltd., was loading shingle at the Noisies in the Hauraki Gulf on Saturday night, when she was caught by a heavy cross sea and filled and/sank. The captain and crew of three got ashore with some difficulty. AN APPEAL CASE. Wellington, Monday. In the appeal case Pirani v. Pirani, the defence was that Mr. Pirani objected to contribute twice, namely, to maintain his children himself and also to pay his wife for their maintenance.

PRISON LABOR OPPOSED. Hastings, Monday. A meeting of the Fruitgrowers' Association discussed Dr. Find] ay's proposal that prison labor be used to plant orchards for lease or sale, while disclaiming any intention to have fruit grown by prisoners in competition with private enterprise. The meeting expressed disapproval of the proposal, and passed a resolution as follows: "This association protests asainst the Government planting orchards, and urges that prison labor be utilised for planting trees to provide timber for commercial requirements."

Costs were given against local residents in the Appeal Court action. Another action is now beina instituted by Mr. C. E. Mackay to upset the trustees of the racecourse and secure their election bv the public every two vears as provided in the original Act. '
