A DOUBLE TRAGEDY.

IN AN AUCKLAND ASYLUM. A SENSATIONAL AFFAIR. By Telegraph.—l\ oss Assocktitn. Auckland, Last Niglit. Auckland Mental Hospital was i.nis afternoon the scene of a double tragedy. About 3 o'clock Captain Herbert Jones called to see an inmate, Mrs. Ellen M. Webster, and was allowed to see her in the corridor, the two being left conversing.

A few minutes later the acting-matron heard a noise as of someone falling, and, rushing into the corridor, found Mrs. Webster stretched on the floor, and Jones kneeling across her body. Beside them lay a bottle that had contained prussic acid, and it was evident that he man had administered poison to the woman and then taken a dose himself.

Both expired within a few minutes. Jones was an ex-Imperial officer, and served in the Soutih African war. He was a married man, about fifty years of age, and lived at Little Omaha. Mrs. Webster was the wife of George Webster, of the same place. The motive of the tragedy is unknown.
