CANADIAN "DOMINION DAY."
CELEBRATIONS IN LONDON. THE PREFERENCE QUESTION. By Association—Copyright Reeved July 3, 5.5 p.m. London, July 2. [There was a great gathering in connection with the Canadian Dominion Day celebrations in London. Lord Strathcona, High Commissioner for Canada, presided. King George sent a message of felicitations to the gathering. . The Hon. W. S. Fielding (Minister for Finance) remarked that if at any time the people of the' Motherland desired a preferential arrangement with the colonies, Canada's right to enter such an arrangement would be unimpaired by any commercial arrangement. Xhat principle would be maintained in any future arrangement, whether with the United States or European countries.
AN UNTRUE STATEMENT. CAUSES CONSIDERABLE EXCITEMENT. Received July 3, 5.5 p.m. Ottawa, July 2.
Considerable excitement was caused throughout Canada by Sir •Douglas being credited with a statement that Canada discriminated against British immigrants in order to encourage American immigrants, and also that the aspirations of Canadians were spreading for annexation with the United States.
Sir Archibald Douglas disclaims making the statement.
