EAST DORSET BY-ELECTION.

The election for East Dorset due to the unseating of Captain Guest (Liberal) resulted in the return of Major Guest, brother of the deposed menioer. The voting was:—-Guest (L.), 0y67; Nicholson {€.), 1375. THE BUDGET. Lonu .!, July 1. Mr. Asquith stated that the later stages of the Budget mignt be taKen at the autumn session. Newspaper comments suggest that Mr. Asquith wishes to retain the allegiance of the Nationalists until the veto question assumes definite shape. Rumours mis week foreshadow the possibility of the conference proving a failure. Irish newspapers threaten strenuous opposition to the whisky duties. THE COMING CONFERENCE. London, July 1. There are indications that in the event of the conferenca proving a failure Government will submit the Veto Bill to the Lords in the autumn with a view to a general election in January. OLD-AGE PENSIONS.
WILL COST FOURTEEN MILLIONS. Received July 3 ,5.5 p.m. London July 2. The Spectator, going into details in connection with the Budget, indicates that the 240,000 paupers who take pensions in January will make the total pensioners over a million, casting nearer fourteen million pounds than the twelve millions estimated.
