PETROLEUM NEWS.
Reports from Moturoa yesterday show that No. 2 bore is still flowing freely. No. 1. was reamed out 40ft, and No. 3 wa9 drilled 9ft, demonstrating that there is no obstruction in No. 3 to prevent rapid boring. The oil war in Mexico has a peculiar interest to New Zealand, in view of the fact that the production of oil in Taranald may seriously threaten the monopoly enjoyed by the great American Trust in this country and lend to a similar contest here.—Lyttclton Times. The time is very opportune for cutting off the grip of the oil oetouus on New Zealand and for giving British oil companies a chance. In British North Borneo there are several good wells being very successfully worked and worthy of encouraging. From all account? the prospect of complete success in Taranaki is very bright, and we do not suppose any one will dispute the assertion that New Zealand oil should have our support in preference to the Yankee Rockefeller article.—Wanganui Herald.
