In our telegrams on Saturday morning it was stated that the decision of the No-License Convention at Wellington was arrived at after two and a-half hours' debate. As a matter of fact, the debate lasted over two days and a-half. One agent has < 90,000 cases of apples stored in Melbourne for the early spring market. In some of the refrigerating chambers cases of Bon Chretian pears are in excellent .-ondition after three months' storage. A curious example of forgetful ness came to light at the annual meeting of a West Australian mining company, the 0 olden Horseshoe, held in London last month. The accounts showed that the j unclaimed dividends amounted to a sum of £'43,908! For a section of land at Inaha, near Hawera, £53 as an acre was offered nt Hawera on Saturday. The reserve of the owner (Mr. W. C. Phillips) was £SB 10s, and no business resulted. The 333 acres comprising the estate is at present carrying 350 head of cattle. In his lecture at Berlin, at which the Kaiser was .present, Mr. Roosevelt said: "When in lAmerica we study 'labor problems and attempt to deal with subjects such as life insurance for wageworlcers, we turn to see what you do here in Germany, and we also turn to see what the far-away Dominion of New Zealand .is doing." Apropos the rubber boom, an amazing instance of good luck has befallen a man ■who was asked a few years ago for a loan of £SOO. "I have lost money heavily," the borrower said at the time, "but I will give you the title deeds of a rubber estate—although I do not sup- | ipose they are worth much." The lender | has just disposed of the rubber estate 1 to a company, and has made a profit of ! £320,000. [ Two first-offending inebriates were j brought before Mr. H. F. Russell, J.P., yesterday morning and fined 5a and costs. One of them didn't take the sentence too kindly, and in a maudlin tone questioned the decision. In answer i to a question by the Bench as to his indulgence in alcoholic liquor before appearing in Court, lie admitted the impeachment, saying he was a born gentleman and must own up to his fault. He excused himself by saying that he wasn't a blackguard, but had merely had a drink or two to keep his poor old soul alive. Mr. Russell admonished him to ldave the drink alone.
A special meeting of the St. Aubvri Town Board was held on .Saturday, Messrs. 0. E. Blanchard (chairman), F. Ilodson, W. J. Russell, and H. Putt being present. The chairman reported to the Board that lie and Mr. Russell had arranged with the manager of the Bank of Xew Zealand for an overdraft to pay current account. It was deckled not to advertise for a glerk, but to offer the position to Mr. Fleetwood, who had acted as returning officer and done the preliminary work of the Board. In the event of his declining the offer applications will bo called through the Press for the position. Mr. Evitts'is to be offered the position of road foreman at £2 12s per week. The tender of Messrs. T. and R. Parkins for the supply of 300 yards of metal was accepted; metal to be delivered on the South Uoad as directed by the foreman. An awkward little contretemps lias arisen between several Wellington unions and employers in connection with the non-observance of the Prince of Wales' Birthday on 23rd June last. The secretary of the Employers' Federation circularised members to the effect that as no Prince of Wales had been created there was no necessity to observe the 23rd as a holiday. Workers and masters in most cases accepted the situation, and businesses were kept open. On the eve of the holiday word was received .by cable | that the Heir-Apparent had been "created Prince of Wales on the 22nd. Those unions whose members worked on the 23rd (the Prince of Wales' Birthday) intend to demand holiday rates a<jpording to the award, it being argued that workers should not be penalised for the employers' unconscious breach. The matter was put by the Labor Department before the Minister, Mr. i Millar, who has referred the question' to the Crown Law Office for an opinion.
