AN AFFRIGHTED COW.
The cow that charged the little girl in Devon struct on Wednesday afternoon had a very lively passage through the town, and more than one person vnm glad to tako advantage of a friendly gate, whilst one hastily climbed a pieKet fence. His heel caught between s>• pickets, and he had aa uncomfortable time until he managed to wriggle free. The cow was ordinarily quiet enough, and had been milked for three or four years. Evidently, however, she was of a nervou;*, temperament, and didn't relish being, driven by men on horseback along the streets of a town. Mr. Alexander and an employee were driving her from Fitavoy to Moturoa when she ran amok. As stated yesterday, in one of her ttand rushes she gored a horse. With the usual perversity of fate, she selected the more valuable one—that ridden by Mr. Alexander. It was a thoroughbred, owned by Mantell, and was one of Musketry's stock, valued at somewhere about £2OO. Mr. Alexander sent for Mr. Taylor, the veterinary surgeon at Waitara, and he found a rib broken and the intestines pierced by the goring. He advised that the life of the horse couul not be saved, and it was intended to have shot him yesterday, but "Catapult" died as the result of his injuries.
