WAITARA NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Last Night. The s.s. Waimate arrived on Thursday morning. Her outward cargo consists of 5500 qrs. beef, 500 lambs, 500 carcases mutton, 1000' pigs, 1000 crates frozen small goods, 1400 cases canned meats, 00 sacks hides, 94 casks tallow, 165 casks oleo, 13 casks casings, 40 casks pelts, 07 bales wool, and 3 'bales hair for London, and 1100 carcases mutton and 756 quarters beef for Gibraltar. The annual meeting of tae vVaitara Municipal Band was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening, Mn T. Buchanan presiding. The balance sheet (particulars of which appeared in Tuesday's issue) and the re.port were adbpted. Opinions were expressed by members that the year's working, aad been "very satisfactory. The chairman congratulated the band on the position attained, which he thought was highly creditable. A pleasing feature was the large amount paid in subscriptions by active members, and the small iunuuat showing as overdue. By continuing, to pull together there was no dioubt that "the band would be a successful one both musically and financially. The 'bandlmaster submitted a report expressive of satiisifstction with the attention paid by members to practice, to their admirable showing at the Wanganui contest, and. a belief that a continuation on the same lines would place them in the position of capturing the shield. The following officers were appointed for the ensuing year: Patron, Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P.; president, His Worship the Mayor (Mr.i W. F. J«nkins); vice-president, Mr. W. Birdlingj deputy-bandmaster, Mr. Skelton; sergeant, Mr. C. Sampson; corporal, Afc. J. McKenzie; lance-corporal, Mr. J.I Kibby; custodians, Messrs. B. McKkvyl and W. Byrne; committee, Messrs. J. MeKenzie, J. Kibby, B. Cudby, B. McKoy, wita the deputy-bandmaster and secretary; secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. Spin-die; assistant secretary, Mr. N. Kyle; bon. auditor, Mr. T. Buchanan. Honorary members' subscriptions were fixed at 10s 6d. A long discussion took place on the matter of active members' subscriptions, after which it was' resolved "that the entrance fee be 2s 6d j and Is per week subscription, drummers to pay 6& per week. After some rou-l I tine matters had been dealt with thej chairman, on behalf of the individual j members of the band, asked the acceptance by the bandmaster (Mr. McCon-l nell) and the drum-major {'sir. ft. P.J Lister? of large framed photographs of j the biend, taken at Wanganui in contest i week. The chairman referred to thej great strides made by the band undeni Mr. McConnell, and trusted that he would continue in his good work. The| assistance given by Drum-Major Lister! had been of much service to the band; and members desired to show their ap-j preciation. The recipients, who were| taken by surprise, expressed thanks to members for their thoughtfuluees, aaid said it would have been difficult for the | band to have chosen a memento that] would have been more appreciated.. To-night week has been selected as a fitting date to open the Clifton Rawing Club's new hall. The function will take the form of a social. Lovers of the terpsichorian art will have a choice next week. On Wednes-j clay, Thursday and Friday evening | dances are set down, whilst on Tuesday and Saturday rinkers have their night out. Monday is usually an off-night, but there is' some talk of asking the member to get another couplfe of days inserted in each week for rest purposes. The North Taranaki Rifles are holding a social this evening. Loeul performers wlio assisted at a function given to Mr. J. Andrews at Huiraagi on Wednesday evening say it was a very successful affair. Mr.' and Mrs. Andrews were the recipients of a silvt"- service.
